UPS vs USPS - Who is better and why?
When okay was pretty new most every body shipped UPS. Then the USPS offered flat rate shipping boxes (no matter what the weight). This was a deal for many small items that could fit in the flat rate boxes but were heavy. Then the postal rates went up and some changes were made to the flat rate shipping and other size boxes. Now the weight does factor in the price for USPS and anything over their largest flat rate box (which is pretty small and would not allow for much packing materials) is considered odd sized and subject to the odd sized box surcharge. Because I ship mostly large, antique dolls, this meant $28 to ship one doll that cost me $14 before the rate change. I decided to check out UPS Ground and was pleasantly surprised to find that their charge for the same box was $16 which included $100 worth of insurance and a tracking number! Better still, UPS's insurance rates are cheaper, too - $1 per $100 of value over the first $100. United States Postal Service charges $1.65 for the first $100 and some odd amount for every $50 or $100 more than $100 which seems to have no rhyme or reason to it. I know that I will not bid on an item if the shipping is higher than what it could/should be. I figured there were a lot of people out there who are just like me and I'd rather have more customers and cheaper shipping rates for my customers plus the peace of mind insurance and tracking provides. Now I have received no less than 10 parcels from United States Postal Service (I can't control the way other people ship) that have been stomped on, squashed flat, broken to bits, opened and rifled (someone was shopping in my packages hoping to find some treasure), and even stolen (empty box). When I contacted the US Post Master they denied any fault! Saying it must have been that way when the seller dropped it off at the post office! I contacted the seller with pictures of the box and they are always surprised that the box was so destroyed and offered to testify if it came down to that. I have had dolls that I shipped through USPS and dolls I was supposed to receive through USPS that had a tracking number (extra charge) and insurance (another extra charge), and they still disappeared off the face of the Earth. Again the Post Master blamed the seller which was in some cases me and some cases not me but in all cases was not true. An added bonus for UPS is no tremendous line that is wrapped around the inside of the building and out the door.Bottom line: USPS is a government agency and has no fear of the customer and no need to please the customer as they have no gepetition. With packages, yes, they have gepetition but as far as regular old mail goes, who else is there? UPS is a gepany who values their customers because the person working in the UPS stores all over the country is a franchise owner and they want to please the customer so you will gee back again and again. The drivers are more careful with the packages because their job is on the line if they are not. UPS is cheaper all the way around and much safer.
